NOTES:
Cornelius moved from Schenectady to the Hawkesbury Ontario area around the turn of the 19th century. He worked on the Ottawa River, where he was captain of one of Judge McDonnell’s Durham boats ferrying goods and people from the Montreal area to the rapids at Pointe Fortune where they were transhipped for further passage up the river. Later he was captain of the “St. Andrews”, a steamer built in 1827-28 that worked the lower Ottawa River between Lachine and Carillon. After marrying Eliza Jane they bought a 100 acre farm at Vankleek Hill, and he also worked as collector and assessor.
